Cinco de Mayo and the Big Moon at the Rock n Firkin Open Mic

It was the night of the Super Moon... Cinco de Mayo 2012 and my good friend and bandmate, Chris Brock, was hosting an open mic at the Rock n Firkin. I headed down there to play a few songs and enjoy some music and ended up having a great time.  When I got there, Stephen Rozborowskyj was sounding great so I ordered a draught of Ricard's Red and by the time I sat down I was called up to do a few tunes.  Chris was brave enough to join me and we decided to start off with an acoustic version of Rain - a bit heavy to be done as an acoustic duo but we figured we'd go for it.  Crazy began when a mysterious drummer guy comes up and asks if he can drum for us... we dug in and within a few bars we were rocking out as a trio.  After belting it out over a few songs we made way for Vince Austin - one of the songwriters I met at the Songwriters Workshop in April.  He has a bit of an unusual thing going - he sings whatever lyrics come to mind in the moment.  After a few tracks Stephen and his as yet unnamed band rocked out hard-assed mix of covers and originals - then it was back to open mic.  Chris and I played a few more with the mystery drummer (who I then learned is Nik Beeton - keep an eye out for more about him in another post) as well as the drummer with Stephen's band (insert name here!).  Vince asked us to back him up for a few songs where we just made it all up as we went which was killer.  I played some random chord progression, threw in some random chorus-like parts here & there while Chris happily wanked some melodic electric guitar.  Vince made up random verses, choruses and by the end of it all there were some folks quite surprised to learn we'd made it all up on the spot.  That was killer!  After that everyone had a go at more songs which kept the crown going into the next day.  At the end of the night we all got to take in the super moon as we made our way home.  Good times!
